October Produce Giveaway

PRODUCE GIVEAWAY

Every third Saturday of each month we host a free produce giveaway at People’s Baptist Church to the Oakland community and to anyone who is in need of some healthy food. The Alameda Food Bank delivers a truck loaded with fresh produce and we, along with volunteers, prepare the site by sorting the produce and preparing boxes and bags to be given away. At 12pm, the gate opens and volunteers gather information from each guest requesting food. After this, the guest form a line and are able to pick out what they would like with the assistance of our volunteers. Once our guests reach the end, they are greeted by someone to carry their bags to their vehicles.

ADVANCED MOVIE SCREENING AND DISCUSSION: KICKS

We had the pleasure of hosting an advanced movie screening and discussion on the movie KICKS which premiered in theaters on September 16th, 2016. KICKS takes place in the Bay Area’s own Richmond and Oakland, Ca and highlights many issues, such as violence and manhood, that are oftentimes associated with the sneaker culture. We wanted to use our platform to share this movie and discuss its major themes that also transpire in many urban communities nationwide. Our goal is to spark proactive thinking in diminishing the overzealous attitude towards materialism.

We would like to give a special thanks to The Grand Lake Theater for allowing us to use their theater for our screening.

CONVERSATIONS: REJUVENATING THE BLACK COMMUNITY

CONVERSATIONS ON REJUVENATING THE BLACK COMMUNITY WITH THE STUDENTS OF COLOR AT BENTLEY HIGH SCHOOL

We were honored to join the conversation on problems facing the African American community and brainstorm potential solutions to reform them. We met some of the young leaders of Bentley High School and offered our advice on how to navigate through a society that does not always provide support nor respect while maintaining a sense of pride and appreciation of one’s history and culture.
